It’s that time of year again – Christmas morning for Australian whiskey lovers. Back by popular demand (and probably three or maybe even four times a year from now on), the Starward Distillery is about to release another Special Projects version – this time it’s Tawny #2 .
Historically, these cult classic drops sell out across the country faster than you can say “single malt.”
After ginger beer concoctions and casks of South Australian shiraz in 2021, the Mad Hatters of Port Melbourne Distillery revisit their sold-out outing of Tawny #1 (awarded the world’s best whiskey at the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Competition in 2020).
For 2022, Starward Chief Distiller Sam Slaney and Starward Founder David Vitale have brought back Tawny Fortified Wine Casks for the second time, now in a 700ml bottle compared to the 500ml of the original.
Like Tawny #1, this new Special Projects release was fully matured in Tawny fortified wine casks (both fresh and charred). The distillers then added puncheon and hogshead casks, allowing them to showcase the vibrant tropical notes of their classic Starward spirit.
Tawny #2 immediately embraces raisins and toasty oak on the nose. Brown sugar and rich dried fruit stand out on the palate, while warm spice lends a slow, lingering finish. Could it be a rival to Nan’s fruitcake? So they pretend.
But here is the kicker. There are a limited number of bottles circulating, which means the ballot is back. It closes on February 28 (next Monday) and the ballot will take place on March 1. All successful applicants will be notified by email. After the poll, there will be a number of retailers stocking bottles of Tawny #2 from March 15, although they are hard to track down. Each bottle of Tawny #2 will cost RRP $149.
